Watch Sea Lions at Pier 39
The rowdy California sea lion colony has ruled K-Dock since 1990. Free viewing platforms, hundreds of barking residents, and sourdough shops steps away.
The inside local's take
They showed up unannounced after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and never left. The colony peaks in winter with over 900 sea lions crowded onto the floating docks.
The viewing decks on the west side of Pier 39 are free and open 24 hours. The Marine Mammal Center runs live talks on weekends.
Combine with a walk to Ghirardelli Square for hot fudge sundaes and Aquatic Park for a swim in the (very cold) bay.
